Our Experience, Our Approach

Many therapists consider counseling couples to be the most challenging work they do.  For this reason, most of the IPG staff has completed special post-graduate training in this area.

Our treatment approach is pragmatic: we focus on helping  you solve the most pressing conflicts you have.   But we also teach you  communication skills: how to "fight fairly", express needs clearly, and understand and empathize with your partner's point of view.  Our goal is for you to be your own relationship counselors.

Although the majority of relationship counseling we do is with couples, we also have work polyamorous relations.  For more information, see our page on Polyamory.

Relationship Counseling NJ & NYC

Symptoms of a relationship in trouble:

You don’t have fun with each other any more; your sex life is unsatisfying or non-existent; you have angry, escalating arguments where you say hurtful things; you are cold and distant with each other; you disagree over even trivial things. If things are extreme, you may resort to physical violence or escape through affairs, drugs or alcohol.

Couples/ Marriage/ Relationship Counseling

Problems with our partners can be the most frustrating issues we have to face, leaving us feeling crazy, overwhelmed and miserable.  We start our relationships feeling hopeful, buoyant and exhilarated, believing we have found our "soul mate".  All too often, this dream fades.

When things get bad in your relationship, you may flee or you may stay and suffer.  Neither gets a good result.  Unfortunately, many people are reluctant to get the counseling that might save their relationship.  And research shows that the average couple waits seven years from the beginning of relationship problems before seeking therapy.

We can't promise we can save your relationship.  But even couples who do go to marriage or relationship counseling and then separate do so in a more amicable way, and with personal insight into what went wrong.
